Marcia Powell was serving a 2+ year sentence at the Perryville state prison and was put in an unsheltered outdoor holding cell awaiting a transfer to an observation cell.
48 year old Marcia Powell collapsed in the 108 degree heat after less than four hours within 20 yards of guards who were supposed to check on her every 30 minutes.
The woman who had a history of prostitution and drug abuse was put in a chain link holding cell offering no shade in the 100+ degree heat was being moved to observation after a session with the psychologist but was delayed due to a disturbance in the observation ward.
Director of the local nonprofit Middle Ground Prison Reform, Donna Leone Hamm, called the outdoor cages barbaric. Results of the autopsy for Marcia Powell have not been made public yet.
