Earthquake Lights – See the video of the earthquake lights that were seen 30 minutes before the Sichuan earthquake.

The earthquake lights look like pink and purple clouds, sort of a rainbow effect. They seem to reflect off the clouds, so they may not be visible on a clear day.

According to Friedemann Freund, a chemist-turned-NASA geophysics researcher, the lights are a way of predicting earthquakes.

The way earthquake lights work is: When rocks are put under enough pressure such as when tectonic plates shift, they turn into ‘batteries.’ The resulting electrical currents can travel miles into the earth according to Freund. The infrared images observed by NASA were concentrated several hundred miles from the epicenter of the roughly 8.0 magnitude earthquake that struck on May 12, killing at least 34,000 people.

About the China earthquake lights, Mike Blanpied of the US Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program said, “At this point that is largely in the realm of speculation.” The USGS funds around 100 earthquake research projects but not Dr. Freund’s work.

Well, I don’t know about you but, speculation or not, if I see those earthquake lights near my house, I’m hanging onto my hat.

And that’s the latest chatter about earthquake lights.
