Waldo Watermelon - Here is the picture of Waldo Watermelon Seed that caused Veronica Hannon Thrasher to start such a racist ruckus at the Calfornia State Fair.
Waldo the Watermelon Seed was part of an art exhibit to celebrate the $30 million Colusa County’s seed crop.
Veronica Hannon Thrasher and her husband attended the California State Fair and took offense to the watermelon seed artwork saying it looked like “a happy black slave eating watermelon.” (That’s Veronica, front row on the left.)
What the racism screaming Thrashers didn’t know is that the artwork was a project assigned to boys at the Fout Springs Boys Correctional Facility, a juvenile hall whose population is 40% black and 40% hispanic.
When Veronica Thrasher was told origins of the artwork she responded with… your’re gonna love this… “But they probably never had the benefit of a black history class” showing images of African Americans “as a happy black slave eating watermelon. If the students were presented with that history they might have drawn Waldo Watermelon Seed a little differently.”
A study in black history part of the curriculum for all school age children, Ms. Thrasher. But to include a white history class or a white history month in the school’s curriculum would be considered racism.
Another interesting piece of information: Look at that picture of Veronica Hannon Thrasher above. It’s a picture of the local chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, a national group of registered professional nurses and nursing students. Do you see any white people there?
