US Senator Edward Brooke – US Senator Edward Brooke had an affair with Barbara Walters, see pictures below, in the 1970’s according to Walters in her autobiography entitled ‘Audition’ and again will be revealed during her appearance on Oprah on May 6th.

US Senator Edward Brooke was the senator of Massachusettes. He took office in 1967 and was the first African-American ever elected to the Senate. He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004.

Barbara Walters said she and Edward Brooke both knew at the time that if the news of their affair came to light, it would damage or end both of their careers. Remember the days when adultery was actually a bad thing?

At the time Barbara Walters was a co-host for the NBC Today Show, but soon left to join ABC News where her career skyrocketed. She was twice divorced when she began her affair with US Senator Edward Brooke who was married at the time.

The affair with Edward Brooke ended before he lost the race for his third Senate term in 1978. Senator Brooke later divorced and remarried, but it is not known if the affair had anything to do with his divorce.

Of Edward Brooke, Oprah asked Barbara Walters if she was in love. Walters replied, ”I was certainly - I don’t know - I was certainly infatuated. I was certainly involved. He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington.”
