Yves Saint Laurent died at 11:00 pm. He was a native of Oran, Algeria and quickly made a name for himself when he arrived in Paris at the age of 17 with original designs in hand.
Saint Laurent was hired by the Dior design house and found himself in charge when Dior died three years later. Putting his career on hold in 1960, he went home to Algeria to fight in his country’s war for independence.
After only three weeks he was given an exemption and returned to Paris, only to find he had been replaced. Together with his associate and lover Pierre Berge, he started his own design label, YSL. Saint Laurent is well known for accessories and perfume like Opium.
Before Yves Saint Laurent died, he enjoyed success in the ranks of Dior, Chanel, and Lagerfeld. The details of his death have not been released, but AIDS is suspected.
